Summer Gardening Tips

Perhaps one of the biggest mistakes many gardeners make is not pruning their plants. When a plant starts to get a little larger than you wanted, don't be afraid to cut it back a bit. You should also take the time to remove the dead flowers, also known as "dead-heading." By dead-heading your plants and flowers, you will help increase the bloom time, along with increasing the strength of your plants and flowers.

Depending on where you live, you may have to water your plants a little more frequently, especially during the hot and humid summer days. When watering, be cautious not to over-water your plants and you should never water your plants just before dark. Doing so could cause problems such as fungus. The ideal time to water is during the early morning hours.

Many people enjoy having flowers that bloom all summer long and one way to enjoy this is to stagger your planting times. It is not too late to plant summer bulbs that are in bloom and then sit back and look forward to enjoying them for many more seasons to come. When planting bulbs, you will want to make sure you cut them back once they have gone through their blooming process.

Now is the time when many vegetable gardens are in full bloom and it is equally important to keep up with the harvest. When you leave fruits and vegetables on your plants for too long, you are running the risk of having insect damage. When this happens, your plants may fall behind on producing as well. Don't forget to check on your garden at least every other day and the sooner you correct a problem, the better off you'll be.
